Happy Happy!

6 / 21 / 115 / 28 / 15
Today is my husband’s 30th!  I surprised him a few weeks ago with an early day of celebration.  After a  round of golf with some of his best buddies {to get him out of the house??}, he came home to our condo with a little note describing why we weren’t having a romantic dinner pour deux, as planned.

Instead, I had planned for a low key party at our home, but because I had to keep the plans from him, I had to purchase and set everything up during his round!  There wasn’t a flower in the place, but plenty of pretty candies and treats for our Cake and Cocktails evening…Here are just a few pics from the offerings:
Delish cupcakes were dressed with little flags.

Confetti Cookies from Sweet Mandy B’s {may have been for ME!}

Sugar-dusted donut holes.

A tower of Oreos was paired with chilled milk for dunking.

Cutie Whoopie Pies were yet another chocolate tribute to the birthday boy.
Rock candy in the perfect shades…

Jelly candies {again, for color and for Kara!}.

Suckers were secured in milk glass vases filled with sugar for a pretty presentation.

White chocolate covered graham bits were a hit!

Sweet Mandy B’s also did the rich and velvety chocolate cake.
Gorgeous seasonal berries were accompanied by fresh whipped cream.

Manly mason jars were dressed up with stripey straws and flags I made by hand.

Instead of a full bar, I offered a blueberry vodka lemonade…

Old man beers…
And cigars…
Happy Birthday, Joel!  Can’t wait to share the next 30+ with you by my side!

Oh…Henri!

Amidst the hustle and bustle of last week, Renny insisted we make time for ourselves…A lunch date was penned in our diaries and we weren’t going to bail – we promised!  It turned out to be a bit of a celebration, a Beyond Blissful year together! and Renny asked where we should dine.  I had recently heard and read nice things about the new French-American restaurant by the owners and chef of The Gage, called Henri.
We arrived for our late lunch to a packed house – busy with businessmen, locals, foodies, symphony-goers and tourists alike – all taking time out of their schedules for a sophisticated mid-day meal.
The bright restaurant initially reminded me of a European salon, a beautiful dusty robins egg blue {or nile blue to us industry folk!} and chocolate brown color pairing dressed the walls and the furniture.  The staff was beyond welcoming and friendly…something that most new, hot restaurants seem to care less about.  After a brief moment to freshen up {the luxe restrooms were modestly and handsomely marvelous} we were seated immediately, thanks to our reservation.
After Renny’s insistence of beginning with a coupe of champagne (the glasses were substantially gorgeous – and you know I’m a sucker for a saucer of bubbly!), the polished bus boy offered up a gorgeous mahogany tray of freshly baked french bread.  Our meals were as dreamily delicious as the day’s warm weather and the decor.  I ordered the mussels – I truly argue – the best I’ve had.  They were submerged in the lightest, most delicious fennel broth, paired with a crusty piece of bread, perfect for trying to sop up every last drop of the salty goodness.  Renny ordered the snapper and was as equally impressed as I was.  After summoning all of our willpower, we passed on the dessert and instead ordered cappuccinos.
I so enjoyed being a lady-who-lunched and so appreciated the company and generosity of my dining companion.  The meal was delish, and I’m already dying to head back…
Oh, Henri…I think I’m fallin’!

Breakfast of Champions

The buzz has begun.  Famed LA cupcake bakery has opened up shop on Walton.  The already bustling neighborhood is now teeming with patient people coming to sample the sweet treats.

I must admit, I’m known to be a bit of a cupcake connoisseur…and a tough critic, loyal to local favorite:  Sweet Mandy B’s.  So, earlier this morning, my husband and I  decided to take Illie on a walk to judge for ourselves.
We got there shortly after opening, the line was not yet out the door.  However, the wait was still {seemingly unnecessarily?} quite long.  We picked up a four-pack of varied flavors and a little something for the pooch and hiked back home.
We sampled {clockwise from the left} vanilla cake with milk chocolate frosting, black and white, banana with vanilla frosting and vanilla with vanilla and sprinkles.
A sugar-high and few glasses of milk later – we had come to our decision…

My heart and cravings belong to Sweet Mandy B’s…Cupcake Champion.
